Quite honestly there’s far too much of what I like to call misinformation about article marketing (and a plethora of other things I’m sure) floating around out there to trust any ONE person or source as if their word is the absolute definitive rule of thumb to live by.

What I prefer to do instead of listening to all of the so called experts is to look at the industry as a whole for a more well rounded definition of what “duplicate content” means and how it’s treated by the search engines and in this case especially I want to focus on article marketing and how things are handled by the search engines in regards to reposted content.

To do this we go to Google News, Yahoo News and MSN News to see what they’re posting and if it’s original content, or if they’re using news feeds to simply auto-post to their website and update daily. The first thing you’ll notice when you do this is that at the top page of Google News in bold red letters it says;

“Search and browse 4,500 news sources updated continuously.”

….oh my! So even the mighty Google is getting news from other sources? Does this mean that they’re reprinting those articles too? Before coming to final conclusions I went to Yahoo News and MSN News to find BOTH OF THEM running the same stories in some cases and even using the exact same images!

Then after I was done reading this news article I noticed the letters AP, which stands for Associated Press, and that these two search engine juggernauts were reprinting their information. In fact going back to Google I found the same story with a different picture and a slightly different mini-paragraph teaser that’s meant to entice you in to reading the article.

Amazingly enough this too lead to an article on Reuters.

What’s happening here is that many people in the article marketing world and those who use press releases are posting to syndicated content sites. These pieces of information are then being picked up on by other websites and being reprinted verbatim, making sure to give the author credit for their work.

So is this really duplicate content? My answer is no.

Anyone that has done article marketing long enough to realize the above info comes to a point where they realize that if Google is doing it they’re not very likely to penalize you for following in their footsteps. As long as you’re offering high quality content that has solid value you should keep posting your articles UNCHANGED to as many websites as possible, or the very least making sure to get them posted to the larger article distribution sites so that they’ll get spread out from there.
